Building on the long-standing work of the LSU Center for Energy Studies (established in 1982), the Institute brings together faculty, data, and expertise from across the LSU campus to address complex energy issues that matter to Louisiana and have relevance well beyond the state. The Energy Institute is organized around seven interconnected core areas: Energy Policy, Energy Research, Development & Demonstration (RD&D), Energy Education & Outreach, Energy Information & Data, Energy Innovation, Energy Law, and the Louisiana Geological Survey. Together, these focus areas reflect the Institute’s commitment to rigorous analysis, high-quality research, accessible information, and meaningful engagement with stakeholders.
The Energy Policy core area builds on decades of experience providing objective analysis to legislators, regulators, and public agencies. Energy RD&D coordinates research activities and demonstration-scale projects while documenting and advancing the Institute’s substantial research legacy. Energy Education & Outreach focuses on improving energy literacy through programs such as Energy Fundamentals, statewide engagement, and K–12 partnerships. Energy Information & Data provides consistent, transparent, and replicable energy data to support informed discussion and decision-making, including responsibilities established under Act 727. Energy Innovation creates structured pathways for stakeholders to support cutting-edge research across LSU through competitive, well-governed funding mechanisms. Energy Law integrates legal analysis into energy research and education through close collaboration with the LSU Law School. The Louisiana Geological Survey serves as the state’s official geological survey, maintaining authoritative surface and subsurface data for a wide range of public and scientific uses. By integrating these core areas within a single Institute, LSU seeks to provide a coherent, interdisciplinary platform for understanding energy systems and their economic, legal, environmental, and societal dimensions. The LSU Energy Institute aims to serve as a credible, accessible resource for policymakers, industry, researchers, and the public as energy-related challenges and opportunities continue to evolve.
