Louisiana Geological Survey
The Louisiana Geological Survey (LGS) is now formally part of the LSU Energy Institute under Act 331 of the 2026 Louisiana Legislative Session, strengthening the integration of Louisiana’s energy and geological programs. LGS brings more than 90 years of expertise in geological mapping, subsurface data, and resource assessment to support the Institute’s research and policy mission.

The LSU Energy Institute is pleased to announce that the Louisiana Geological Survey (LGS) is now formally located within the Institute, following the enactment of Act 331 of the 2026 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature (HB 987, by Representative McFarland), signed into law on May 22, 2026.

The Act amends and reenacts R.S. 17:1492, unifying energy-related programs at LSU by moving LGS under the Energy Institute. Under the legislation, LGS is responsible for maintaining surface and subsurface geological surveys statewide and coordinating with state agencies, including the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the Department of Conservation and Energy, on the storage, management, and modeling of geological and geographic information system data. The Energy Institute will coordinate with and provide periodic updates to the Natural Resources Commission on survey storage and maintenance.

Established in 1934, LGS brings more than 90 years of expertise in subsurface mapping, geological data, and mineral resource assessment to the Energy Institute's interdisciplinary research and policy mission.
