Dr. Greg Upton
Interim Director, Energy Institute
Acting Director, Louisiana Geological Survey
Located at Louisiana State University, the LGS is charged with maintaining current surface and subsurface geological surveys of the entire state and working in cooperation with other state entities and political subdivisions, as required by law. The LGS’s mission is to collect, curate, analyze, and disseminate high-quality geological data for Louisiana. While a substantial portion of the state’s subsurface data has been generated through energy exploration and development, the role of the LGS is broader than energy alone. Its work supports a wide range of uses, including land-use planning, infrastructure siting, environmental analysis, water resources, coastal processes, hazard assessment, and scientific research.
Within the LSU Energy Institute, the LGS provides foundational geoscientific information that informs many other core areas, including energy policy, research and demonstration activities, data and information systems, and legal and regulatory analysis. Accurate geological data and interpretation are essential for understanding subsurface conditions, geologic history, and natural systems across the state.
By maintaining comprehensive and up-to-date geological surveys and collaborating with public agencies, researchers, and stakeholders, the Louisiana Geological Survey serves as a central, authoritative source of geological information for Louisiana, supporting informed analysis and decision-making across a wide range of public and private interests.
